While Sicily claims to have invented pizza, it was actually in Naples that modern pizza is thought to have begun. In the 18th century Neapolitan royalty had a pizza oven at their summer villa, and in 1889 the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, who was summering in Naples, had the city’s famous pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito make her pizzas. His patriotic combination of red, white and green (tomato, mozzarella and basil) became known as a ‘margherita’. Who we are Following the success of Pizza e Birra in Sydney’s Surry Hills, owners Mauro Marcucci and Silvana Iacobaccio, turned their attention to Melbourne. Having shared a long working history, this latest partnership brought their signature modern Italian cuisine to St Kilda’s buzzing Fitzroy Street in November 2007. Owner of acclaimed restaurants Caffe E Cucina and Il Bacaro, culinary entrepreneur Mauro moved		interstate to open Beccofino in Brisbane, before launching Sydney’s popular Pizza e Birra and chic wine bar Mille Vini. Silvana completed most of her cooking apprenticeship at Caffe E Cucina and Il Bacaro, before moving to the Tuscan Grill, South Yarra’s Cosi, her own venture Boccone in Balaclava, and Ladro on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. Pizza e Birra’s stylish, contemporary dining room and welcoming atmosphere allows Silvana’s modern Italian food to take centre stage, creating a place where family and friends can come together to eat, drink and enjoy la dolce vita. Sourcing quality local and imported ingredients from the finest suppliers, Pizza e Birra’s seasonal menu and daily-changing specials offer a range of antipasto, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, seafood and meat dishes, and tempting homemade desserts.
