While Sicily claims to have invented pizza, it was actually in Naples that modern pizza is thought to have begun. In the 18th century Neapolitan royalty had a pizza oven at their summer villa, and in 1889 the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, who was summering in Naples, had the city’s famous pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito make her pizzas.
